Certificate of Origin: How to Improve Document Readiness
Understand the commercial and supporting records that should be organised before an ordinary or preferential Certificate of Origin application.
Clarify why origin proof is required
A Certificate of Origin may be requested by an overseas buyer, bank, distributor, customs broker or destination authority. The first step is to confirm whether the request is for ordinary origin evidence or preferential treatment under a trade agreement.
The answer affects the form, supporting evidence and origin criteria that must be considered. Do not promise a preferential certificate until the product and manufacturing facts have been reviewed.
Organise the shipment file
Prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, export permit information, transport details and product description. Where origin depends on manufacturing or processing, additional production and cost records may be needed.
- Buyer, seller and consignee details
- Product description, quantity and invoice value
- Country-of-origin basis and manufacturing information
- Export route and expected shipment date
- Any customer-specific wording or presentation deadline
Build time for clarification
Origin applications can be delayed when product descriptions, manufacturer details or cost information are incomplete. Start the review before the carrier cut-off or bank presentation deadline, especially for first-time products.
